S63 · 4.4 twin-turbo V8

BMW S63 tuning

The S63 is BMW M's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 — the engine behind the M5 (F10 and F90), M8, M6, X5 M and X6 M. It already makes huge torque, and a custom tune turns that into genuinely savage, sustained pace.

BMW S63 tuning, by model

SamuelTuned covers S63 tuning and remapping across the BMW M5 (F10) (F10), BMW M5 (F90) (F90), BMW M6 (F06 / F12 / F13) (F06 / F12 / F13), BMW M8 (F91 / F92 / F93) (F91 / F92 / F93), BMW X5 M (F15) (F15), BMW X6 M (F16) (F16), BMW X5 M (F95) (F95) and BMW X6 M (F96) (F96). Each one gets a custom, individually-calibrated remote ECU remap — Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. Open the configurator on your car to choose your stage, add the options that fit, and send the full build to Samuel.

BMW S63 tuning explained

01

Big V8, bigger headroom

The S63 leaves the factory with a lot of left on the table for warranty and emissions. A custom map raises boost and optimises timing and fuelling across both turbos, and the result is a step in torque you feel everywhere — these cars become seriously, deceptively fast for their size.

02

Why custom on a V8

A twin-turbo V8 has two banks to balance and a lot of thermal load to manage. Samuel calibrates each S63 individually from datalogs, keeping it safe under sustained load and matched to your fuel and hardware — not something a generic OTS file can do responsibly on an engine this highly stressed.

03

Hardware and the twin-ECU note

Stage 1 is software only. Stage 2 adds downpipes for the full breathing benefit. Note the S63 (like the N63) is a twin-ECU engine, so an ECU unlock — where required — is needed per ECU; Samuel confirms this from your VIN and handles it as part of the build.

Tune stages

S63 tuning stages: Stage 1, Stage 2 & Stage 3

Stage 1

Big torque gain

Software only on stock hardware. Huge, sustained mid-range.

Stage 2

Bigger still

Downpipes + supporting hardware for full top-end.

E85 / custom

Quoted per build

Ethanol and harder builds, calibrated bespoke around your setup.

Figures are indicative and depend on the exact model, fuel and supporting hardware. Every tune is calibrated individually — open the configurator for your car for the precise build and price.

FAQ

S63 tuning, common questions

The S63 makes a large torque gain from a custom Stage 1 alone — these cars feel transformed in roll-on acceleration. Exact figures depend on the generation, fuel and hardware.

The S63 is a twin-ECU V8, so where an unlock is required it applies per ECU (two unlocks). Samuel confirms from your VIN and includes it in the build.

Bootmod3 and MHD both support the S63 across its generations. The tune is delivered remotely to flash at home.

When calibrated properly, yes. A bespoke map managed to your fuel and hardware is far safer on a highly-stressed twin-turbo V8 than a generic off-the-shelf file.
