What Is Bootmod3?

The BMW flash-tuning platform (bm3) explained — what it is, which BMWs it fits, and how to run it properly.

If you have started looking into tuning your BMW, you have almost certainly come across bootmod3 — often shortened to bm3, and occasionally typed as boot mod, bootmod 3 or bootmode 3. It is one of the two platforms (alongside MHD) that most BMW owners end up using. This guide explains what bootmod3 actually is, which BMWs it supports, and what you need to run it.

What is bootmod3 (bm3)?

Bootmod3 is a flash-tuning platform for modern BMWs. It rewrites the calibration on your car's engine control unit (the DME) so the engine runs more boost, a revised torque curve and reworked fuelling and ignition — more power and a sharper throttle, with no physical hardware on most stages. You buy a licence for your car, flash it through the OBD port using a small wireless adapter, and switch between maps from your phone.

It is sold as off-the-shelf (OTS) maps you can flash yourself, and it is also the platform a lot of professional tuners — including us — use to deliver fully custom calibrations. Same app, very different result depending on who builds the map.

Who makes bootmod3?

Bootmod3 is developed by Protuning Freaks (PTF) in the US. They maintain the app, the OTS map library and the licensing system; independent tuners then build custom maps on top of it. So when you buy bootmod3 you are buying access to the platform — the quality of the tune still comes down to whoever calibrates it.

Which BMWs does bootmod3 support?

Bootmod3 covers most turbocharged petrol BMWs from roughly 2007 onward, across these engine families:

  • N20 / N26 — 320i, 328i, 428i, 125i and similar 2.0L turbo fours
  • N55 — M135i, M235i, 335i, 435i and the N55 M2
  • S55 — F80 M3, F82 M4, F87 M2 Competition
  • B48 — current 2.0L turbo: 230i, 330i, 430i, F40 M135i
  • B58 — M140i, M240i, M340i, M440i, 340i, 440i, Z4 M40i, Toyota Supra
  • S58 — G80 M3, G82 M4, X3 M, X4 M
  • N54 — older twin-turbo 135i / 335i / 535i (legacy support)
  • N63 / S63 — twin-turbo V8 M5, M6, X5 M, X6 M

In model terms that is the cars people ask about most — M2, M3, M4, M5, M135i, M140i, M235i, M240i, M340i, 330e, 320i, 335i, 435i, X3 M and X4 M — across both F-series and G-series chassis. If you are not certain your exact car is covered, send us the reg and we will confirm it.

OTS maps vs custom tuning

Off-the-shelf (OTS) maps are pre-built calibrations from the bootmod3 library — Stage 1, Stage 2 and so on — designed to work across a whole engine family. They are a solid, safe starting point and they are what most people flash first.

A custom tune is built specifically for your car: your fuel, your mods, your climate, validated on data pulled from your own engine. That is where the real, safe power is — plus the cleanest part-throttle drivability and proper flex-fuel or multi-map setups. The platform also supports map packs, multimap switching and flex-fuel kits (for example a bootmod3 flexfuel kit on a B58) once you move past OTS.

What do you need to run bootmod3?

Three things, and that is it:

  • A bootmod3 licence for your car (tied to your VIN / engine).
  • A compatible OBD WiFi flash adapter to write the maps — the same adapter handles datalogging and map switching.
  • The bootmod3 app on your phone (iOS or Android) to flash and switch maps.

We supply the bootmod3 licence and the OBD WiFi adapter, set the car up for you, and — if you want more than an OTS map — build the custom calibration. See bootmod3 pricing for what a full setup involves, or if you would rather not deal with licences, adapters and app setup yourself, that is exactly what we handle.

Is bootmod3 safe? Does it void your warranty?

Flashed responsibly, on sensible targets and good fuel, bootmod3 is a mature, well-proven platform. The risk is almost never the platform itself — it is the map and the decisions behind it. A flash is also detectable and can affect your warranty, so it is worth understanding the trade-offs before you tune. We go deeper on this in our dedicated bootmod3 safety guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is bootmod3 a one-time purchase?
The bootmod3 licence is tied to your car and is a one-time purchase for that vehicle; OTS maps are included and custom tuning is separate. Tell us your chassis and we will confirm exactly what your car needs.
Do I need an adapter to run bootmod3?
Yes. You flash bootmod3 over the OBD port with a compatible WiFi adapter, and the same adapter handles datalogging and map switching. We can supply the adapter alongside your licence.
Will bootmod3 damage my BMW?
Flashed responsibly, on sensible targets and good fuel, bootmod3 is a mature, well-proven platform. The risk is almost never the platform itself, it is the map and the decisions behind it, which is why a hand-built calibration matters.
Can SamuelTuned set bootmod3 up for me?
Yes. We supply the licence and adapter, handle the setup, and build the calibration, from a clean Stage 1 to full flex-fuel and trackside development.
