01 · The Platform

This is a G80 M3 Competition — and if you tune cars for a living, this is the one. Few modern platforms reward a proper map and the right hardware as openly as the G80 does. That is why I went out and bought my own.

02 · Why I Bought It

I have mapped hundreds of these now. Customer cars in the UK, across Europe, the Middle East, the United States. After enough of them you stop guessing what a change is going to do and start knowing it — that is the level you reach when you have lived inside one engine family long enough. But customer cars only go so far. Past a certain point you need your own car to push past the envelope you sell, run your own development, and prove the next stage end-to-end before anyone else's car gets near it.

03 · The Engine

The S58 is the most tuneable engine BMW has produced in a generation. Closed-deck block, forged crank, dual injection, twin mono-scroll turbos, real cooling capacity engineered in from day one — every constraint that limited the previous S55 platform has been addressed at the metallurgy level. Stock the Competition makes 510hp and 650Nm; with bolt-ons and a CS+ map it walks past 600hp with zero drama, and the block has the headroom to keep going well beyond that. I work almost exclusively on BMWs because the engineering responds, and the S58 responds harder than anything else BMW currently builds. That is why this car is the development platform.
