About this tune

The F56 Cooper S shares its B48 turbo four with the BMW 320i/330i (badged B46 on US emissions cars). Stage 1 is software-only on stock hardware; Stage 2 adds an intercooler, sports cat/decat and intake. Note the low-compression Cooper S has weaker pistons than the JCW — JCW-level power needs forged internals first. 99 RON is strongly recommended on any aggressive map.

MINI Cooper S 3-door Hatch tuning

Three doors, the shortest wheelbase in the range and the classic hot-hatch recipe — the F56 is the car most people picture when they think of a fast MINI. Built from 2014 to 2024, it pairs a light front-wheel-drive body with BMW's B48 turbo four, and because it responds so vividly to every extra horsepower, it has become the most commonly tuned MINI on the road.

From the factory the F56 Cooper S makes 189–192 bhp and 280 Nm. Samuel's Stage 1 calibration lifts that to 245–260 bhp with 360–400 Nm on completely standard hardware, transforming mid-range pull without touching a single component. Fit an intercooler, sports cat or decat and an intake, and Stage 2 pushes the little hatch to 270–285 bhp and 420–460 Nm.

Owners chasing more can go well past that — with forged pistons and a larger turbo the B48 in this chassis supports builds up to around 400 bhp. Everything is handled remotely: you flash through BM3, MHD or MG Flasher, Samuel delivers your custom file within 24 hours, and the original calibration is saved so the car can go back to stock whenever you choose.

The MINI Cooper S runs the BMW B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four — the same engine as the BMW 320i / 330i, badged B46 on US emissions cars. Across the range (F56 3-door, F55 5-door, F57 Convertible, F54 Clubman, F60 Countryman) it leaves the factory around 189–192 bhp, with meaningful headroom left in the calibration for warranty and global fuel variation. Cooper S 3-door tuning — frequently asked questions

Stage 1 is a software-only remap of the standard B48 and lifts the 3-door from 189–192 bhp and 280 Nm to 245–260 bhp with 360–400 Nm. Nothing needs fitting — the map is flashed through the OBD port — and the difference is felt everywhere, from throttle response to how hard the car pulls out of corners.

An intercooler, a decat or sports cat and an intake, with cooler spark plugs advised. With the stock turbo properly fed and cooled, Stage 2 takes the F56 to 270–285 bhp and 420–460 Nm. Samuel checks your exact parts list before writing the file, so the calibration matches what is actually bolted to the car.

Traction is the practical limit on any front-wheel-drive MINI, and the calibration is written with that in mind — torque is built progressively rather than dumped at once, which keeps the front axle hooked up in the lower gears. Good tyres and a sensible right foot do the rest; on the road the tuned F56 puts its power down surprisingly well.

A Stage 1 Cooper S comfortably outguns a standard JCW, so for most owners tuning is the cheaper route to the same pace. The caveat is internals: the Cooper S runs weaker pistons than the JCW, so if you eventually want JCW-plus power at Stage 3, forged pistons come first. Up to Stage 2 the standard engine is well within its limits.
