Cooper S 5-door
B48 / B46 (US)

The 5-door MINI Cooper S runs the BMW B48 2.0-litre turbo four (B46 in the US — same engine). Hand-calibrated from Stage 1 software through to a built-engine turbo project. Choose your package, send your build to Samuel, and get a tune that fits how you actually drive.

MINI Cooper S 5-door Hatch (F55)

About this tune

The F55 5-door Cooper S shares its B48 turbo four with the 3-door (badged B46 on US emissions cars). The F55 was not offered as a factory JCW. Stage 1 is software-only on stock hardware; Stage 2 adds an intercooler, sports cat/decat and intake. The low-compression Cooper S needs forged internals before JCW-level power is safe. 99 RON strongly recommended.

MINI Cooper S 5-door Hatch tuning

A pair of rear doors and a longer wheelbase separate the F55 from its 3-door sibling, and they change who buys it: this is the Cooper S for owners who need to carry children, dogs and shopping without giving up a hot hatch. Because MINI never built a factory JCW version of the 5-door, tuning is the only way to make an F55 seriously quick — which is exactly why so many end up on Samuel's books.

The standard car leaves the line at 189–192 bhp and 280 Nm — brisk, but with obvious headroom. Samuel's Stage 1 file raises that to 245–260 bhp and 360–400 Nm using nothing but software, putting the 5-door past a factory JCW hatch on outputs. Stage 2, with an intercooler, sports cat or decat and an intake fitted, targets 270–285 bhp and 420–460 Nm.

If the project grows, the B48 will support around 400 bhp in this chassis once forged pistons and a bigger turbo are in place. None of it requires a visit to anyone: the file arrives in your BM3, MHD or MG Flasher account inside 24 hours, you flash it over OBD yourself, and the saved stock file means the whole thing unwinds in minutes if you ever need it to.

MINI Cooper S tuning — B48 / B46 stages, hardware and what to expect (F54 / F55 / F56 / F57 / F60)

The MINI Cooper S runs the BMW B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four — the same engine as the BMW 320i / 330i, badged B46 on US emissions cars. Across the range (F56 3-door, F55 5-door, F57 Convertible, F54 Clubman, F60 Countryman) it leaves the factory around 189–192 bhp, with meaningful headroom left in the calibration for warranty and global fuel variation. MINI Cooper S tuning with Samuel starts by finding exactly where that headroom sits on your specific car and fuel, then building a map that extracts it reliably. One reliability point shapes every Cooper S build: the low-compression Cooper S piston is weaker than the JCW's, so the safe road to big power runs through forged internals before JCW-plus figures.

Stage 1

245–260 bhp · 360–400 Nm

ECU/DME software only, flashed via the OBD port on stock hardware. Sharper throttle, a much broader torque curve and the response the Cooper S should have shipped with. The most cost-effective single change on the platform. 99 RON strongly recommended for the full figure.

Every MINI Cooper S tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, and reviewed against your data logs before sign-off — never a base map loaded and left.

FAQ

Cooper S 5-door tuning — frequently asked questions

MINI simply never offered the F55 with the John Cooper Works drivetrain — the factory range topped out at the Cooper S. That makes tuning the natural upgrade path: Samuel's Stage 1 alone lifts the 5-door to 245–260 bhp, beyond what a showroom JCW hatch produces, while keeping the practicality that made you choose five doors in the first place.

From a stock 189–192 bhp and 280 Nm, Stage 1 delivers 245–260 bhp and 360–400 Nm with no hardware changes at all. It is a pure recalibration of the B48's boost, ignition and fuelling, flashed through the OBD port, and it makes the 5-door feel like a different car in everyday driving.

99 RON — Tesco Momentum or Shell V-Power in the UK — is strongly recommended on any aggressive map. Higher-octane fuel lets the calibration hold more ignition timing safely, which is where a good chunk of the gain lives. Tell Samuel what you actually fill up with and the file is written around that, not around a fuel you can't get.

Insurers must be told about a remap — it is a material modification. Warranty is more nuanced: a dealer can reject a claim if a tune is shown to have caused a specific failure, and since Samuel's maps respect the B48's mechanical limits and the car can be flashed back to stock, many owners judge the risk acceptable. The call is yours to make.

Yes, completely. Your original calibration is read from the car and stored before anything is written, so returning the F55 to factory software is a 15-minute flash you can do yourself. That matters when it's the family car — dealer visits, resale or a change of heart are all covered.
