BMW B48 tuning explained

The B48 build path

Stage 1 needs nothing. The B48 runs conservative boost and fuelling across all its variants from the factory — the 320i and 420i especially, detuned for positioning within the range. A custom Stage 1 remap moves both: stronger mid-range pull, sharper throttle, and a calibration built to your exact variant and fuel from your datalogs. The ZF 8-speed gets tuned alongside via xHP for the full step-change in feel. Stage 2 adds a downpipe and intake where applicable, extending that delivery into the top end. For the 330e and 530e plug-in hybrids, xHP is not compatible with the PHEV TCU, so Samuel offers a remote Custom TCU Tune for those cars instead. You will need a Windows laptop and an ENET cable to flash it, but the rest of the process is the same. The B48 is supported on Bootmod3, MHD and MG Flasher. Samuel confirms the right platform from your VIN before the build starts.

Yes, when calibrated properly. Samuel tunes from your datalogs and to your actual fuel — that keeps timing and boost inside a safe window for your specific car. It is also why a custom map is the right call on a road car, not a generic OTS file.

Stage 1 is software only on stock hardware. No downpipe, no intake, no parts at all. Stage 2 adds a downpipe and intake where applicable, which lets the engine breathe properly for the bigger top-end numbers. Stage 2 is not a requirement, but it is the natural next step once Stage 1 is not enough.

It depends on the model. The B48 runs in several different states of factory tune — the 320i and 420i start at 184 bhp stock, the 330i and 430i at 255 bhp, the 530i at 248 bhp and the Z4 sDrive20i at 197 bhp. Stage 1 delivers a meaningful gain on each. Exact figures depend on your variant, fuel and any supporting hardware. Open the configurator for your car for the specific build and price.

It depends on your VIN. Some B48 cars are locked from the factory, some are not. Samuel confirms from your VIN before the build starts and includes the unlock in the quote if it is needed.
