The B48 is BMW's 2.0-litre turbocharged four — the engine in the 320i, 330i, 420i, 430i, 530i and Z4 sDrive20i, and the petrol side of the 330e and 530e plug-in hybrids. It is far sharper than the badge suggests once it's properly mapped.

More than the badge suggests

The B48 is heavily detuned from the factory across its many model variants for positioning and emissions. A custom tune frees up genuine, daily-usable performance — stronger mid-range, sharper throttle and a gearbox that responds the way it should. A 320i or 330i feels like a different car after Stage 1.

Custom calibration matters here

Because the B48 appears in so many states of tune, a generic file is a blunt instrument. Samuel maps each car to its exact variant, fuel and hardware from your datalogs — the safe, effective way to get the most from the 2.0 turbo. We also tune the ZF 8-speed alongside for the full step-change in feel.

330e / 530e plug-in hybrids

The 330e and 530e can't run xHP gearbox software, so we offer our own remote Custom TCU Tune for those cars (you'll need a Windows laptop and an ENET cable to flash it). The petrol B48 side is calibrated as normal for the platform.

Definitely. The B48 is significantly detuned from the factory, so a custom Stage 1 delivers a genuine, daily-usable jump in mid-range and response — one of the most cost-effective tunes we do.

The petrol B48 is tuned as normal. For the gearbox, those PHEVs don't support xHP, so we offer our own remote Custom TCU Tune — you'll need a Windows laptop and an ENET cable to flash it.

Bootmod3, MHD and MG Flasher all cover the B48 depending on model and DME. Samuel will confirm the right one from your VIN.

No — Stage 1 is software only and flashed remotely. Hardware only comes in at Stage 2 if you want the bigger top-end.
