BMW 330e (G20)

About this tune

The G20 330e (2019-present) is BMW's mainstream plug-in hybrid 3 Series, the same B48 turbocharged 2.0-litre four found in the 330i, paired with an 80-kW electric motor on the input shaft of the 8HP gearbox. Combined system output is 288 bhp and 420 Nm, with EV-only running for short urban trips and the petrol unit doing the work everywhere else. Available as the G20 saloon and G21 Touring, the 330e is one of the most-tuned BMW plug-ins in the UK, the underlying B48 responds to a remap exactly the same way the regular 330i does, and the electric motor's torque is unaffected by ECU work, so the combined figures move up cleanly. If you have been comparing a 330e tuning box or chip-tuning options, a proper ECU remap on BM3, MHD or MG Flasher gives cleaner, safer and fully reversible gains without a piggyback device, and it is what every package on this page is built around.

BMW 330e tuning

Company-car tax made the 330e the default plug-in 3 Series, but underneath the hybrid badge sits the same B48 turbo four as the petrol cars, with an 80-kW electric motor built into the input side of the eight-speed gearbox. Owners tune it because the electric assistance stacks on top of whatever the petrol engine makes — so a remap moves the combined output further than on any non-hybrid B48.

Factory combined output is 288 bhp and 420 Nm. Samuel's Stage 1 recalibrates the petrol side only and the system total climbs to 400 bhp and 600 Nm — the motor's contribution is untouched, it simply adds to a much stronger engine. With a downpipe and intake, Stage 2 targets 450 bhp and 720 Nm combined, which turns a sensible plug-in saloon or Touring into something genuinely rapid.

A hybrid-turbo or full-frame build stretches the 330e to around 600 bhp combined, calibrated case by case around the fitted hardware. Delivery is entirely remote: order, send your build details, and within 24 hours a hand-written file is waiting in BM3, MHD or MG Flasher to flash through the OBD port — with the original calibration stored so the car returns to stock whenever needed.

Engine guide

BMW 330e tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect from the PHEV B48

The 330e is the plug-in hybrid version of BMW's G20 3 Series, sharing the B48 turbocharged 2.0-litre four with the regular 330i and pairing it with an 80-kW electric motor mounted on the input shaft of the ZF 8HP gearbox. BMW 330e tuning works on the petrol side of the drivetrain, the same OBD-port remap that any other B48 G20 receives, applied to the MG1 DME, with the electric motor contribution remaining factory and stacking on top of the recalibrated petrol output. From the factory, the B48 in the 330e is detuned to prioritise efficiency and protect the hybrid system's torque budget; BMW G20 330e tuning with Samuel unlocks the headroom BMW left on the table without changing how the hybrid system behaves.

Stage 1

400 bhp · 600 Nm (combined)

No hardware required. The ECU map is revised via the OBD port on the MG1 DME, boost pressure, ignition timing, fuel delivery and torque limiters all adjusted. Combined system output moves from 288 bhp / 420 Nm to around 400 bhp / 600 Nm, with the petrol side doing the heavy lifting and the electric motor stacking on top exactly as it does from the factory. This is the BMW 330e chip tuning starting point, the most cost-effective single change available on the platform, and the most popular choice for both G20 saloon and G21 Touring owners.

Every tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. BMW 330e tuning done correctly means accounting for the PHEV-specific torque-management system as well as the standard B48 variables; the calibration is reviewed against your data logs after the first flash and revised before sign-off.

FAQ

330e tuning — frequently asked questions

The remap rewrites the petrol engine's calibration — boost, fuelling, ignition and torque limits on the B48. The electric motor, battery and charging system are left entirely standard, as is EV-only running. Because the motor's output is fixed, every gain on the petrol side passes straight through to the combined figures.

From a combined 288 bhp and 420 Nm, Stage 1 takes the system to 400 bhp and 600 Nm with no hardware changes. The electric assistance stacking on the recalibrated engine is what makes the jump so large — it is one of the biggest Stage 1 gains across Samuel's whole BMW range.

Yes. A plug-in box intercepts sensor signals to fool the standard calibration, which the DME was never designed for. A remap rewrites the calibration itself, so every protection strategy still works with accurate data. It is cleaner, safer and fully reversible — flash the saved stock file and no trace of the tune remains.

No. Electric range, EV mode behaviour and charging are managed independently of the engine calibration Samuel modifies, so the car's around-town hybrid manners are unchanged. The difference appears when the petrol engine is working — under load the tuned B48 simply contributes far more than it did.

To roughly 600 bhp combined, which makes the 330e one of the highest-ceiling four-cylinder cars Samuel tunes. That territory needs a hybrid or full-frame turbo with downpipe, intake and supporting fuelling, and each calibration is built around the exact specification.
