About this tune

The F87 LCI M2 Competition (2018-2021) is the S55-engined M2, replacing the N55 of the pre-LCI M2 with the same twin-scroll twin-turbo straight-six fitted to the F80 M3 and F82 M4. Stock is 410 bhp / 550 Nm, sent rear-wheel through either the 7-speed M-DCT or a 6-speed manual. RWD only. The smallest body BMW M fitted the S55 into, and one of the most tuner-popular M cars of the 2010s.

BMW M2 Competition tuning

The M2 Competition exists because BMW dropped its biggest small-car engine into its smallest body. The 2018 facelift retired the N55 and fitted the F87 with the same S55 that powers the M3 and M4. Short wheelbase, rear-wheel drive, DCT or manual, built until 2021. Owners tune it for a simple reason: it already handles better than its power figure suggests, and the engine has an enormous amount left in reserve.

BMW rated the M2 Competition at 410 bhp and 550 Nm, deliberately shy of its bigger siblings, but the software ceiling is the same. Samuel's Stage 1 takes the F87 to 520 bhp and 700 Nm on untouched hardware, a bigger proportional jump than any other S55 car gets. Stage 2, on downpipes, midpipe and intakes, targets 560 bhp and 750 Nm, with E40 flex fuel available on top.

The compact body does not shrink the ceiling: hybrid and full-frame turbo builds carry the M2 Competition into four figures, topping out around 1,200 bhp with port injection or an HPFP lift behind them. Delivery is entirely remote. Samuel writes the file against your declared hardware and fuel, sends it to BM3, MHD or MG Flasher within a day, and the stock map travels with it so nothing is permanent.

Engine guide

BMW M2 Competition tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect from the F87 LCI S55

The F87 LCI M2 Competition (2018-2021) is the S55 dropped into the M2 body, replacing the N55-powered pre-LCI M2 with the same twin-scroll twin-turbo straight-six fitted to the F80 M3 and F82 M4. From the factory, BMW set the M2 Competition at 410 bhp / 550 Nm; the hardware ceiling sits considerably higher. BMW M2 Competition tuning with Samuel applies the same S55 Stage 1 / Stage 2 / Stage 2 Flex map family used on the F80 / F82 cars, with a calibration that translates the torque jump into the M2's tighter chassis. BMW M2 Comp tuning and BMW M2 Competition F87 tuning use the same map.

Stage 1

520 bhp · 700 Nm

No hardware required. The MEVD17 DME is flashed via the OBD port. BMW M2 Competition Stage 1 unlocks 520 bhp and 700 Nm from the OEM hardware (up from 410 / 550 stock, a larger gain than the equivalent Stage 1 on the M3 / M4 because BMW shipped the M2 Comp with a more conservative software limiter). The BMW M2 Competition chip tuning starting point.

Every M2 Competition tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. BMW M2 Competition tuning done correctly accounts for the F87 chassis behaviour, the M-DCT or manual gearbox calibration, the S55's rod-bearing condition and UK fuel quality; the map is reviewed against your data logs after the first flash and revised before sign-off.

FAQ

M2 Competition tuning — frequently asked questions

More than any other stock S55 car, proportionally: from 410 bhp and 550 Nm to 520 bhp and 700 Nm with no parts fitted. BMW's factory rating held the engine back to protect the M3 and M4's positioning, so a Stage 1 F87 simply reclaims what the hardware could always do.

Only if it is a Competition. Pre-LCI M2s run the single-turbo N55, a different engine with its own stages and pricing, covered on the M2 F87 page. The S55 packages here apply to the M2 Competition, the facelifted F87 sold from 2018 to 2021.

Both take Stage 1 without drama. Above that the paths diverge. The DCT's clutch packs tolerate Stage 2 torque well, while the manual's single clutch is the first thing to protest, so Samuel shapes torque in the lower gears or recommends an uprated clutch depending on how you drive. Tell him which box you have when you enquire.

To around 1,200 bhp at the extreme. The F87 shares its engine, DME and tuning ceiling with every other S55 car. Getting there means a hybrid or full-frame turbo, supporting fuelling via port injection or an HPFP lift, and a bespoke calibration built around your exact parts list rather than a staged file.

A calibration written for your car, not a download. After you send your build details, Samuel prepares the file and pushes it to your BM3, MHD or MG Flasher account within 24 hours. You flash it through the OBD port at home, and the original calibration is retained so the M2 can go back to standard at any point.
