About this tune

The F97 X3 M (2019-present) is the M-division performance SUV with the S58, same engine as the M3, M4 and G87 M2, in a taller, heavier xDrive body. Stock is 503 bhp / 600 Nm on the Competition (which is the only spec sold in most markets). xDrive standard; no RWD option. The X3 M is the family-sized M car, full-fat S58 hardware with five usable seats and a boot, and it tunes exactly the same as the M3 / M4 from an ECU standpoint.

BMW X3 M tuning

The S58 made its debut not in an M3 but in this car, the F97 X3 M, the M division's answer to owners who need five seats, a boot and everyday practicality without giving up a genuine M engine. That is exactly who tunes it: X3 M owners want one vehicle that does everything, and a remap closes the gap to the saloons it shares its engine with.

Competition cars leave the line at 503 bhp and 600 Nm, slightly less torque than the M3 gets, and Samuel's Stage 1 lifts that to 650 bhp and 800 Nm with the hardware untouched. Downpipes, a midpipe and intakes take Stage 2 to 720 bhp and 900 Nm, and the Flex Fuel option adds up to 800 bhp on E50. With xDrive standard, the X3 M deploys those numbers with unusual ease.

Like the saloons, the F97 carries a locked DME that needs a single unlock before its first map; the process is routine and permanent. From Stage 2 the platform scales all the way to roughly 1500 bhp on turbo hardware. The whole service is remote, a bespoke file on BM3, MHD or MG Flasher within 24 hours, flashed on your driveway and reversible to the factory calibration whenever you like.

Engine guide

BMW X3 M tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect from the F97 S58

The F97 X3 M (2019-present) runs the S58 in performance SUV form, the same 3.0-litre twin-scroll twin-turbo straight-six fitted to the G87 M2, G80 M3 and G82 M4. From the factory, BMW set the X3 M Competition at 503 bhp / 600 Nm with xDrive standard; the hardware ceiling sits considerably higher. BMW X3 M tuning with Samuel applies the same S58 Stage 1 / Stage 2 / Stage 2 Flex map family used on the M3 and M4, with a calibration that accounts for the X3 M's higher kerb weight and SUV chassis behaviour. BMW X3 M F97 tuning and BMW X3 M Competition tuning use the same map.

Stage 1

650 bhp · 800 Nm

No hardware required. The MG1 DME is flashed via the OBD port. BMW X3 M Stage 1 unlocks 650 bhp and 800 Nm from the OEM hardware (up from 503 / 600 stock on the Competition). The BMW X3 M chip tuning starting point, the most cost-effective change you can make to BMW's flagship performance SUV, and the difference is immediately obvious given the X3 M's weight.

Every X3 M tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. BMW X3 M tuning done correctly accounts for the F97 SUV chassis behaviour, xDrive calibration, the 8HP gearbox and UK fuel quality; the map is reviewed against your data logs after the first flash and revised before sign-off.

FAQ

X3 M tuning — frequently asked questions

650 bhp and 800 Nm, up from the Competition's 503 bhp and 600 Nm, with no parts required, a 200 Nm torque swing that transforms how the F97 moves its mass. Overtaking response changes most noticeably, because the extra mid-range arrives exactly where an SUV spends its time.

Arguably more so than on the lighter cars. Weight blunts a standard X3 M's response, and the remap gives back what the kerb mass takes away; the percentage gain matches what an M3 receives, and xDrive means all of it is usable. Tuned, the F97 keeps pace with far more focused machinery while still carrying the family.

Yes. X3 M DMEs are factory-locked against third-party writes, the same as the G80 and G82 generation cars. The unlock is done once, early in the process, and from then on the car reads and flashes over OBD without restriction on BM3, MHD or MG Flasher.

Downpipes, a midpipe and intakes, the standard S58 recipe. Freeing the exhaust lets the factory turbos carry 720 bhp and 900 Nm, and opens the door to the Flex Fuel option for up to 800 bhp on E50 blends. Fuelling and intercooling remain factory at this stage.

No, the entire process happens wherever the car is parked. Samuel builds the calibration from your submitted details, delivers it to your flashing account within 24 hours, and you write it through the OBD port yourself. For a family car that cannot disappear to a workshop for days, that is a genuine advantage.
