BMW M3 (G80)

About this tune

The G80 M3 (2021-present) is the first generation to offer xDrive alongside the traditional RWD layout, both variants run the same S58 and respond identically to tuning. Competition and standard models share the same base map with different software limiters; Samuel's calibration addresses both. Available as the G80 Saloon and G81 Touring, with the Competition xDrive being the most popular variant in the UK. Whether you are after G80 M3 Competition tuning or planning a parts-led build, every package here is a hand-built S58 calibration on BM3, MHD or MG Flasher rather than a generic off-the-shelf map.

BMW M3 tuning

Five doors or four, the G80 generation is the M3 at its most usable: the G80 saloon carries the badge's benchmark status while the G81 gives the UK its first-ever M3 Touring. Owners tune them for a simple reason, the Competition's 503 bhp is a software figure rather than a hardware one, and the first generation of M3 with xDrive finally has the traction to exploit what the S58 can actually deliver.

From the Competition's 503 bhp and 650 Nm, Samuel's Stage 1 raises the M3 to 650 bhp and 800 Nm on entirely stock hardware. Stage 2 adds downpipes, a midpipe and intakes to reach 720 bhp and 900 Nm, with a Flex Fuel option taking E50 blends as far as 800 bhp. Standard and Competition cars share a base map separated by software limiters, and Samuel calibrates for both, matched to your fuel and fitted parts.

The G80 and G81 both carry a locked DME from the factory, unlocked once before the first map goes on and never touched again. Committed builds carry the S58 towards 1500 bhp with hybrid or full-frame turbos and supporting fuelling. Everything happens remotely: your calibration arrives on BM3, MHD or MG Flasher inside 24 hours, and reverting to the stock file takes one flash.

Engine guide

S58 engine tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect

The S58 is BMW M's highest-output straight-six to date, fitted to the G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2, F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M. From the factory, BMW M leaves meaningful headroom in the calibration, the engine, twin-scroll turbos and drivetrain are all capable of significantly more than the production figures suggest. BMW M3 G80 tuning with Samuel starts with understanding exactly where that headroom sits, then building a map that extracts it reliably across the full operating range.

Stage 1

650 bhp · 800 Nm

No hardware required. The ECU map is revised via OBD port access, boost pressure, ignition timing, fuel delivery and torque limiters are all adjusted. On the M3 Competition the result is 650 bhp and 800 Nm (up from 503 bhp / 650 Nm stock), with a torque curve that feels substantially more accessible through the mid-range. The most cost-effective single modification available on the G80 M3.

Every tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. Tuning a BMW M3 G80 correctly means accounting for real-world variables: ambient conditions, the car's service history, and what the owner actually wants from it. The process includes a data log review after the initial flash, with revisions made before the tune is signed off.

FAQ

M3 tuning — frequently asked questions

Stage 1 takes the Competition from 503 bhp and 650 Nm to 650 bhp and 800 Nm, nearly 150 bhp from calibration alone with no parts fitted. The stock turbos, fuelling and intercooling all operate within their limits at this level, which is why it remains the most popular starting point for G80 owners.

Mechanically the Touring is identical to the saloon, same S58, same DME, same drivetrain options, so the stage targets carry straight across. Samuel still calibrates each car individually against its own fuel, hardware list and use, so a Touring file is built for that Touring rather than copied from a saloon.

Downpipes, a midpipe and intakes. With the exhaust side freed up the standard turbos support 720 bhp and 900 Nm, and adding the Flex Fuel option on E50 blends opens up to 800 bhp. Nothing else needs changing at this stage, as the factory fuel system and intercooling cope with the Stage 2 targets.

Both take the same maps, but they use the power differently. An xDrive car puts the full 800 Nm down almost anywhere, which is part of why the Competition xDrive is the UK's most popular spec; a RWD car demands more from its driver and its tyres. Samuel adjusts torque delivery by gear to suit whichever layout you run.

BMW can reject a claim if it proves a tune contributed to a specific failure, so the risk sits with the owner. Samuel keeps every M3 calibration inside the mechanical tolerances of the S58 and its driveline, and because the car flashes back to the supplied stock file before a dealer visit, the map itself is removable in minutes.
