MHD Stage 1 & Stage 2

Stage 1 & Stage 2.
On MHD, done right.

MHD Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunes for the B58, S55, N54 and N55 — the 335i, M140i, M340i and more. Stage 1 runs on stock hardware; Stage 2 builds on a downpipe and intake. Every file is calibrated to your car, not pulled off a shelf.

Stage 1

Stage 1, on stock hardware.

Stage 1 is a software-only tune for a standard car. We recalibrate boost, timing and fuelling around the factory turbo and exhaust to safely get the most from the hardware you already have. On MHD it is the natural first step for almost every owner, from the 335i to the M140i and M340i.

No parts to buy beyond a good service and decent fuel. You keep full driveability and can return to stock at any time.

What changes

  • 01

Recalibrated boost, timing and fuelling on the stock turbo or turbos

  • 02

Sharper throttle response and cleaner pedal mapping

  • 03

    A fuller mid-range and stronger top-end pull

  • 04

Sensible limiter and load adjustments where it is safe to make them

What you need

  • 01

Stock turbo, stock downpipe and stock intake

  • 02

A healthy engine on a fresh service, with good plugs and a clean intake

  • 03

An MHD licence and the cable or OBD adapter for your chassis

  • 04

Good fuel: 98 / 99 RON, or the highest octane available locally

Stage 2

Stage 2, once the hardware is on.

Stage 2 is calibrated for a car with supporting hardware fitted — primarily a downpipe, usually with an intake. With the exhaust freed up, we can run a more aggressive strategy and ask the turbo for more, which is why Stage 2 sits above Stage 1 across every engine.

Fit the parts first, then come to us for the calibration. On higher-octane fuel or E-blends, where the platform supports it, Stage 2 has even more to give.

What changes

  • 01

A more aggressive boost and timing strategy for fitted hardware

  • 02

Calibration matched to your downpipe and intake

  • 03

Higher airflow targets the stock exhaust cannot support safely

  • 04

Headroom for E-blends or higher-octane fuel where the platform allows

Hardware it needs

  • 01

A catless or high-flow downpipe (the defining Stage 2 part)

  • 02

An aftermarket or high-flow intake to match the extra flow

  • 03

An uprated intercooler or charge pipe on harder-worked or twin-turbo cars

  • 04

Everything on the Stage 1 list, in good order, before we calibrate

By engine

Indicative outcomes by engine family.

The outcomes below are deliberately described rather than promised. Real gains depend on your exact engine, fuel, hardware and conditions, so we confirm numbers against your specific car. The pattern, though, holds across the range: Stage 1 makes a real difference, and Stage 2 builds on it.

B58

B58 — M140i, M240i, 340i, 440i

The B58 is one of the strongest responders on MHD. Stage 1 transforms the car on the stock turbo, and Stage 2 with a downpipe adds real top-end. The 335i badge gives way to the 340i and M140i here, and both love the platform.

Stage 1
M140i and 340i Stage 1 deliver a large, immediate lift on the stock turbo, with a noticeably fuller mid-range.
Stage 2
A downpipe and intake unlock more top-end and cleaner sustained boost. M340i Stage 2 on higher-octane or E-blends has even more to give.

N55

N55 — 335i, 435i, M135i, M235i, M2

The single-turbo N55 takes very well to MHD. The later F-chassis 335i is an N55 car, and Stage 1 sharpens response and fills in the mid-range, while Stage 2 with a downpipe helps it breathe and hold boost higher up.

Stage 1
335i MHD Stage 1 brings a noticeably quicker throttle and a stronger mid-range on the stock turbo.
Stage 2
335i MHD Stage 2 with a downpipe and intake frees up exhaust flow for stronger, more consistent top-end delivery.

N54

N54 — 335i, 135i, 535i, Z4 sDrive35is

The twin-turbo N54 is where MHD built its reputation, and the early 335i is the classic example. There is real headroom in the platform. Stage 1 wakes it up considerably, and supporting hardware lets it pull much harder.

Stage 1
335i MHD Stage 1 on the N54 is a big, usable step over stock thanks to its twin-turbo layout.
Stage 2
Downpipes, intake and the right fuel strategy let the N54 carry far more boost — a long-standing favourite for serious gains.

S55

S55 — F80 M3, F82 / F83 M4, F87 M2 Competition

The twin-turbo S55 has serious headroom. MHD S55 Stage 1 wakes the car up considerably, and Stage 2 with downpipes and an intake — particularly on higher-octane or E-blends — is where the platform really comes alive.

Stage 1
MHD S55 Stage 1 gives a large, very usable lift over stock, with the trademark S55 surge sharpened up.
Stage 2
Downpipes, intake and a high-octane or E-blend strategy deliver some of the biggest gains in the range.

FAQ

MHD Stage 1 & Stage 2 questions, answered.

What is the difference between MHD Stage 1 and Stage 2?

Stage 1 is calibrated for a stock car — no hardware changes beyond a good service and decent fuel. Stage 2 is built for a car with a downpipe and usually an intake fitted, so we can run a more aggressive boost and timing strategy that the stock exhaust would not support safely.

Do I need a downpipe for MHD Stage 2?

Yes. A catless or high-flow downpipe is the defining Stage 2 part. It frees up exhaust flow so the turbo can spool and hold boost more effectively. We usually pair it with an intake, and on harder-worked or twin-turbo cars an uprated intercooler or charge pipe.

How much power will my 335i, M140i or M340i make?

Gains vary with your exact engine, fuel, hardware and ambient conditions, so we quote real figures against your specific car rather than promise a single number. As a guide, the B58 M140i and M340i, the N54 and N55 335i and the S55 all see strong, usable gains, with Stage 2 and higher-octane fuel adding more again. Message us with your car and goals for an indicative figure.

What is the difference between an MHD off-the-shelf map and a custom tune?

MHD ships with proven off-the-shelf (OTS) maps that suit a lot of cars. A custom tune from us goes further: we calibrate to your exact hardware, fuel and climate, then review your datalogs before signing off, so the file is matched to your car rather than a typical one.

Is an MHD Stage 1 or 2 tune safe and reversible?

Our calibrations are developed and proven on real cars on our own dyno, and we review your datalogs before signing off. MHD is a flash tune you can return to stock, and the licence stays with you — handy for service visits or when you sell the car.
