About this tune

The G29 Z4 M40i (2019-present) is the third-generation Z4 roadster with the B58 Gen 2 underneath, and the BMW half of a joint platform shared with the Toyota Supra 3.0. Stock is 382 bhp / 500 Nm, sent rear-wheel via the ZF 8HP. The G29's lower kerb weight (compared to the M340i saloon) means the Stage 1 / Stage 2 torque jump translates into very noticeable in-chassis performance, and it shares its hybrid-turbo and big-turbo aftermarket directly with the Supra.

BMW Z4 M40i tuning

Roadsters rarely come with an engine this serious. The G29 Z4 M40i pairs the Gen 2 B58 with a rear-driven two-seat body that weighs noticeably less than the saloons sharing its drivetrain, so every extra newton-metre registers immediately. Owners tune it because the chassis is honest: quick steering, short wheelbase, no all-wheel-drive safety net, and a properly calibrated map turns a brisk open-top cruiser into something genuinely rapid.

The Z4 M40i is slightly stronger from the factory than its BMW stablemates at 382 bhp and 500 Nm. Samuel's Stage 1 takes it to 440 bhp and 680 Nm without touching the hardware, and on a car this light the torque gain is felt everywhere, not just at full throttle. Stage 2, a downpipe and intake, carries the roadster to 480 bhp and 700 Nm on the original turbo.

Because the G29 shares its platform with the Supra, the hybrid and big-turbo aftermarket is deep, and committed builds can head towards 1,000 bhp with supporting fuel. The tuning itself never requires a workshop visit: Samuel calibrates for your exact car, sends the finished file to bootmod3, MHD or MG Flasher within a day, and keeps the factory calibration on hand so a single flash returns the Z4 to stock.

Engine guide

BMW Z4 M40i tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect from the G29 B58 Gen 2

The G29 Z4 M40i runs the B58 Gen 2, the same revised 3.0-litre single-turbocharged inline-six fitted to the M340i, M440i and Toyota Supra 3.0 (the Z4 and Supra share more than just an engine; they share an entire platform). From the factory, BMW set the Z4 M40i at 382 bhp / 500 Nm; the hardware ceiling sits considerably higher. BMW Z4 M40i tuning with Samuel applies the same Gen 2 Stage 1 / Stage 2 map family, with a calibration matched to the G29 roadster's lower kerb weight.

Stage 1

440 bhp · 680 Nm

No hardware required. The MG1CS003 DME is flashed via the OBD port. BMW Z4 M40i Stage 1 unlocks 440 bhp and 680 Nm from the OEM hardware (up from 382 / 500 stock). The BMW Z4 G29 tuning starting point, the most cost-effective change you can make to the roadster.

Every Z4 M40i tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. BMW Z4 M40i tuning done correctly accounts for the G29 roadster behaviour, the 8HP gearbox calibration and UK fuel quality; the map is reviewed against your data logs after the first flash and revised before sign-off.

FAQ

Z4 M40i tuning — frequently asked questions

The G29 carries a slightly stronger factory rating than most of the BMWs running the same Gen 2 B58, though the mechanical package is shared. It makes no difference to tuning: Samuel's Stage 1 target of 440 bhp and 680 Nm applies regardless of which rating your car left the factory with, and the file is calibrated to your individual car either way.

Yes, with respect. The Z4 M40i's electronically controlled limited-slip differential and wide rear tyres manage Stage 1 torque well in the dry, while in the wet the traction systems step in earlier than they would on an xDrive saloon. Samuel shapes the delivery so torque builds progressively rather than arriving in a lump, which matters more in a short-wheelbase roadster than anywhere else.

Mechanically they are the same platform, sharing engine, gearbox and ECU, so the stages and targets match, and the Z4 benefits from the enormous Supra aftermarket for hybrid turbos, downpipes and fuelling hardware. The calibration is still done per car: a Z4 map is written for your Z4, not recycled from a Supra file.

A downpipe, which means an OPF delete on these cars, plus an intake, followed by a recalibration that takes the roadster to 480 bhp and 700 Nm on the standard turbo. The exhaust change also lets more of the straight-six's voice out, which on a car with a folding roof is half the point.

Arguably more than for a daily. There is no need to book the Z4 in anywhere or lose it for a day: the file arrives in your bootmod3, MHD or MG Flasher account within 24 hours of ordering, flashing takes a quarter of an hour at home, and the stock calibration is kept so winter storage or resale can happen on the factory map.
