About this tune

The G22 / G23 / G26 M440i (2020-present) is the M-Performance 4 Series with the B58 Gen 2, same engine, gearbox and ECU as the M340i in a coupe, convertible or Gran Coupe body. Stock is 374 bhp / 500 Nm with xDrive standard. Available as the G22 coupe, G23 convertible and G26 Gran Coupe; all three share the identical drivetrain. The G22 M440i is widely regarded as the GT-flavoured pick of the B58 Gen 2 family.

BMW M440i tuning

BMW builds the M440i in three shapes, the G22 coupe, G23 convertible and G26 Gran Coupe, and all of them are pitched as grand tourers first, sports cars second. That is exactly what makes tuning worthwhile: the long-legged, refined character stays, but the mid-range firms up into something the GT badge undersells. Owners come to Samuel wanting a faster version of the car they already like, not a different car.

Whichever body you chose, the M440i starts at 374 bhp and 500 Nm. Stage 1 lifts the calibration to 440 bhp and 680 Nm with the hardware untouched, sharpening throttle response and filling in the torque curve where a GT spends its life: overtakes, slip roads, cruising pace. Stage 2 with downpipe and intake targets 480 bhp and 700 Nm, all three bodies taking an identical stage structure.

If the coupe becomes a project, hybrid and big-turbo routes run the Gen 2 B58 out towards 1,000 bhp with the fuelling to match. Nothing about the process needs a ramp: describe your car and hardware, and Samuel hand-finishes a calibration that appears in your bootmod3, MHD or MG Flasher account within 24 hours, with the stock file alongside it so factory is always one flash away.

Engine guide

BMW M440i tuning, stages, hardware and what to expect from the G22 B58 Gen 2

The M440i runs the B58 Gen 2 in G22 coupe, G23 convertible and G26 Gran Coupe form, same engine, gearbox and ECU as the M340i, Z4 M40i and Toyota Supra 3.0. From the factory, BMW set the M440i at 374 bhp / 500 Nm; the platform is structurally identical to the rest of the Gen 2 family. BMW M440i tuning with Samuel applies the same Stage 1 / Stage 2 map across G22, G23 and G26, the body style doesn't change the calibration plan.

Stage 1

440 bhp · 680 Nm

No hardware required. The MG1CS003 DME is flashed via the OBD port. BMW M440i Stage 1 unlocks 440 bhp and 680 Nm from the OEM hardware (up from 374 / 500 stock), with markedly broader torque through the mid-range and a sharper throttle. The BMW M440i chip tuning starting point and the most popular single modification on the G22 / G23 / G26 platform.

Every M440i tune Samuel produces is calibrated individually for the specific car, fuel grade and installed hardware, not a base map loaded and left. BMW M440i tuning done correctly accounts for the G22 / G23 / G26 body weights, the 8HP gearbox calibration and UK fuel quality; the map is reviewed against your data logs after the first flash and revised before sign-off.

FAQ

M440i tuning — frequently asked questions

Yes. The G26 Gran Coupe and G23 convertible run the identical B58 Gen 2 drivetrain to the G22 coupe, so all three take the same stages at the same targets: 440 bhp and 680 Nm for Stage 1, 480 bhp and 700 Nm for Stage 2. The calibration is still built per car, with body style, year and hardware confirmed before the file is written.

Two pieces of hardware: a downpipe, which on these OPF-era cars means an OPF delete, plus an upgraded intake. That frees the exhaust side enough for the standard turbo to hold 480 bhp and 700 Nm. The intercooler, fuel system and gearbox all stay factory at this level.

The ZF eight-speed is rated well beyond Stage 2 torque and needs no changes for 480 bhp and 700 Nm. On hybrid and big-turbo builds the transmission strategy becomes part of the build discussion, so include your gearbox details when you send Samuel your spec and the calibration will suit how the car shifts.

Yes. In the UK a remap is a modification and insurers expect to be told. Some specialist insurers barely move the premium for a declared Stage 1, while an undeclared tune risks a refused claim. The map's reversibility is a convenience for dealer visits, not a reason to leave your insurance unspoken.

The Gen 2 B58 supports around 1,000 bhp at the top of the hardware tree. A hybrid turbo with downpipe, intake and uprated fuelling opens the 550 bhp-plus range; a full-frame turbo with port injection goes beyond that. Each of these is a bespoke calibration, so send Samuel the full parts list and the map is built around it.
